History of Technica
Technica Dance Company was established in 2009 by Leah Portlen teaching from remote hall locations in Balliang & Toolern Vale before moving to Bacchus Marsh where the dance studio really began to grow. Building up the dance school with beautiful dancers & families, Leah was eventually able to fit out the purpose built Technica studios.
Leah started as a dancer at the age of 5 studying all styles of dance, specialising in the CSTD syllabus. Amongst a list of professional dance gigs, Leah’s teaching resume includes over 18 years of dance teaching experience trained under well-known & respected examiner Sharon Kennedy. Prior to opening Technica Leah taught at Melton Dance Academy, Dance Enterprise (AKA Galactic Dance & Events) & Performing Arts Headquarters, along with a stint teaching for the Melton Council Youth Group along with many guest teaching opportunities to add to the list. She has successfully completed teaching diplomas in Modern Jazz, Tapping & Classical Ballet. Leah is passionate about teaching correct dance technique (as the name Technica suggests) to ensure dancers first and foremost minimise dance related injuries and set dancers up for fulltime dance and teaching opertunities should the dancer be interested in a dance career.
If you ask Leah what she loves most about teaching is watching the students grow over the years not only as dancers, but into beautiful souls who are well disciplined and armed with the skills to do well in all aspects of life from school to general life skills as a result of dance and the Technica way of life.
Technica Dance Company studios are located at 17 Smith Street, Maddingley (Bacchus Marsh). The studios have been designed and fully fitted out specifically for dance. Each studio contains modern sprung floors (which reduce impact on body joints), mirrors, ballet barres, powerful sound systems and heating/cooling facilities.
